Rock outcrops enhance abyssal benthic biodiversity

چکیده

Abyssal polymetallic nodule fields represent a unique deep-sea habitat. The hard substratum provided by nodules is thought to increase habitat complexity, promoting the occurrence of highly diverse abyssal assemblages. However, in these habitats also available as outcropping rock fragments, but their contribution heterogeneity has been largely overlooked. Here, we assessed if type and size can modulate benthic biodiversity at local scales within Clarion Clipperton Zone (N Pacific abyss). We compared megafauna (animals >10 mm) assemblages bearing with those areas containing rocks addition nodules. found lower faunal density clearly higher diversity more heterogenous composition only In addition, patch appeared positively influence some taxa, like bamboo corals. These results suggest that rocks, nodules, constitute keystone structures enhancing fields. Rock appear common plains may make regionally-important contributions biodiversity, suggesting they be relevant include conservation efforts.

Scattering from Rock and Rock Outcrops

In terms of target detection and classification, scattering from exposed rock on the seafloor, (i.e., individual rocks and rock outcrops) presents some of the most difficult challenges for modern MCM and ASW sonar systems in shallow water. Work on characterizing, modeling and simulating mean levels and other statistical measures of acoustic scattering from rocks and rock outcrops is therefore c...

A source-sink hypothesis for abyssal biodiversity.

Bathymetric gradients of biodiversity in the deep-sea benthos constitute a major class of large-scale biogeographic phenomena. They are typically portrayed and interpreted as variation in alpha diversity (the number of species recovered in individual samples) along depth transects. Here, we examine the depth ranges of deep-sea gastropods and bivalves in the eastern and western North Atlantic. T...

Rapid Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring Method for Highly Diverse Benthic Communities: A Case Study of Mediterranean Coralligenous Outcrops

Increasing anthropogenic pressures urge enhanced knowledge and understanding of the current state of marine biodiversity. This baseline information is pivotal to explore present trends, detect future modifications and propose adequate management actions for marine ecosystems. Coralligenous outcrops are a highly diverse and structurally complex deep-water habitat faced with major threats in the ...
